Locronan

It is not known whether it was founded by a Celt from Cornwall or Ireland, nor whether this happened in the 6th century or somewhat later. What is certain, however, is that Locronan is one of the most beautiful towns in France—a fact proclaimed by a sign at the entrance.

Nie wiadomo, czy założył je Celt z Kornwalii, czy z Irlandii i nie wiadomo czy było to w 6 wieku, czy trochę później. Wiadomo jednak, że Locronan jest jednym z najpiękniejszych miasteczek we Francji i taki też napis widnieje przy wjeździe.

And so it is. It is tiny—you can walk around it in 15 minutes at a brisk pace—but believe me, it is better to spend more time there. It is teeming with crêperies, biscuit shops, small restaurants, and a multitude of little shops selling local artists’ wares, and even local art galleries.

I tak jest. Jest malutkie, można je obejść szybkim marszem w 15 minut, ale wierzcie mi, lepiej spędzić tam więcej czasu. Roi się w nim od „creperies” (naleśnikarni), „biscuiteries” (biszkopciarni), małych restauracji i mnóstwa sklepików z wyrobami tutejszych artystów, a nawet galerii lokalnej sztuki.

The little shop on the side street is called „La Maison de Poésie” (House of Poetry), and you can buy postcards, books, and local souvenirs there. As for the poetry, I’m not so sure.

Sklepik w bocznej uliczce nazywa się „La Maison de Poesie” (Dom Poezji) i można w nim kupić kartki pocztowe, książki i pamiątki stąd. Co do poezji, to nie jestem pewna.

We return to the square in front of the church. The church is dedicated to Saint Ronan, and its walls were built in the 13th century. In the 15th century, thanks to a generous donation from the Duke of Brittany, the church was transformed into a cathedral. What sets it apart from thousands of other cathedrals is a beautiful 15th-century stained-glass window, a floor featuring the black symbols of Brittany, and a massive pulpit.

I wracamy na plac przed kościołem. Patronem kościoła jest Św. Ronan, a kościelne mury wzniesiono w 13 wieku. W 15 wieku, dzięki hojnej dotacji Diuka Bretanii kościół przekształcono w katedrę. To, co go wyróżnia wśród tysięcy katedr, to piękny witraż z 15 wieku, posadzka z czarnymi symbolami Bretanii i ogromna ambona.

INTERESTING FACT: A massive procession takes place in Locronan every six years. The procession covers 12 kilometers and leads to sites where Druids once gathered for prayer in Celtic times. The next one will be in 2019. If you are interested in this type of worship, look up the term „Le nemeton” (for example, on Wikipedia).

CIEKAWOSTKA: Co 6 lat w Locronon odbywa się ogromna procesja. Procesja ma 12 kilometrów i prowadzi do miejsc, które w czasach celtyckich służyły modłom druidów. Następna będzie w 2019 roku. Jeśli jesteście zainteresowani tego typu kultem, to znajdżcie w np Wikipedii słowo „Le nemeton”. 

It was an excursion that took a good few hours, covering nearly 60 kilometers from Guilvinec. We had lunch at one of the many small restaurants near the town’s „entrance” (driving into the town itself isn’t allowed, but there are plenty of parking lots right at the entry point).

To była wyprawa na kilka ładnych godzin, prawie 60 kilometrów od Guilvinec. Zjedliśmy obiad w jednej z licznych restauracyjek przy „wchodzie” do miasta (wjeżdżać nie wolno, ale parkingów jest ogromna ilość przy wjeździe.

INTERESTING FACT: Films shot in Locronan include Chouans! directed by Philippe de Broca, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s A Very Long Engagement, and Roman Polanski’s Tess.

INFO: Mandatory parking costs 3 euros, but you get a windshield sticker that grants you multiple entries throughout the summer – so it’s not an unreasonable price. Restrooms are located right next to the parking areas and are, of course, free of charge.

INFO: Obowiązkowy parking kosztuje 3 Euro, ale dostaje się naklejkę na szybę, która to naklejka (a nie szyba) upoważnia do wielokrotnego wjazdu przez całe lato, więc nie jest to wygórowana cena. Toalety są zaraz przy parkingach i są oczywiście bezpłatne.  

We’re heading back. It’s wonderful here, but there’s no sea. We still need to go to the beach, even if just for a moment.

Wracamy. Cudnie tutaj, ale nie ma morza. Trzeba jeszcze choć na chwilę iść na plażę.
